The most commonly used application in the Internet is Email, in which users communicate with each other almost instantly. There are millions of Emails that are sent from one part of the globe to the other. Emails can be sent and received from all systems, whether it be a Windows PC or a Unix machine, even cell phones are able to send and receive Emails. Pictures or sounds can be sent along with text messages via Email, with the use of MIME.

Each email account has a unique address. A general format for an email address is:

Your-name@some-computer-name (example: dsmith@simplegraphix.com, dsmith@yahoo.com, dsmith@environ.org)

where ‘your-name’ is your username you use to log at the email server. This is followed by a ‘@’ sign and the name of the computer (or the domain name, if you like) on which your email service resides.

An email message consists of a header and a body. The header has the following information: Recipient email address, Senders email address, Email address of the people to whom a carbon copy (Cc) and blind carbon copy (Bcc) is being sent, and the subject line. The main email message resides in the email body.

Emails can be sent by clicking the ‘Send button.

Found this from Christianne, I learned this.

For chats and blogs
When you don’t want to use your family members’ real names on your blog or on forums:

    * DH / DW – Dear Husband / Dear Wife
* DS1 / DDs / DC – Dear Son (1 meaning he is your first son) /

Dear Daughters / Dear Child (this is usually Dear Children, meaning children of mixed genders). Used in a sentence: I’m panicking! My DH is going away on a business trip and I have to talk care of my 3 DDs, all under the age of 3!)

When you’re showing your appreciation or affection, say:

    * JUAD – Jumping Up And Down. An extreme version is JUADLAM (Like a Monkey). Used in a sentence: You’re having a baby? That’s such exciting news, I’m JUADLAM!
* LYLAB / LYLAS – Love You Like a Brother / Sister. If your teenage son is courting a girl he met online and she tells him, LYLAB, he’ll probably go into his room and not come out for days.

When you’re engaged in a debate or discussion, say:

    * YMMV – Your Mileage May Vary; originated from car commercials who claim that their car goes xx miles to the gallon, but the customer’s actual results may be different. In forum and chat talk, this is similar to saying, JMHO or Just My Humble Opinion. Used in a sentence: The movie was terrible and I didn’t think the lead actor and actress had any chemistry at all, but YMMV.
* IANAL, but… – I’m Not a Lawyer, but this is my take on this legal issue.

To insult somebody’s computer skills:

    * PEBCAK – Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard; often used by system admins or tech support to describe callers who insist that their computer isn’t working properly when they just didn’t know how to use it in the first place. A synonym of PICNIC – Problem in Chair, Not in Computer.

On blogs or when chatting:

    * TMI – Too Much Information, usually said at the end of a disgusting blog entry. Used in a sentence: Today Little Junior’s diaper contained a liquidy green soup topped with corn kernels… oops, TMI?
* IIYWIM – If You Know What I Mean. Best used in a sentence with sexual innuendo and a winking smiley

Now go use these acronyms and make some of your friends scratch their heads and wonder when you got so l33t!

Also known as the Web, WWW or W3, the World Wide Web is a subset of the Internet. It is the most interesting part of the Internet, with its ability to work with multimedia and advanced programming languages. It is a system of Internet servers through which several Internet protocols can be accessed using a single interfaceyour browser. Almost all protocols available on the Internet are available on the Web, thus creating a convenient and user-friendly environment through which email, FTP, Telnet, Usenet News etc. can be accessed.

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol is one of the most famous and popular protocols on the Web. Hypertext documents contain links that connect to other documents or files. Activate these links or ‘hot spots’ through a click of the mouse, and the target document will be transferred to your computer. If it is a web page, it would be displayed in the browser.

HTML or HyperText Markup Language is used to create these ‘hot spots’, which and can be placed as text, pictures etc. A single HyperText document may consist of many such hyperlinks, such that a virtual web of connections can be made from all this “linking.

HTML is used to create web pages. HTML files or web pages are plain text (ASCII) files with a lot of tagsthe building blocks of HTML, which help in structuring a document and displaying visual features such as font size, color, italics etc., and are used in creating hyperlinks and embedding images, sounds, video and other multimedia content. In most cases, HTML tags come in pairs, with a starting and a closing tag. Tag names and tag attributes are enclosed in < and > signs.

Also known as a “discussion group”, “board” or “newsgroup”, a forum is an asynchronous service where you can trade non-instant messages with other members. The other members reply on their own schedule, and do not need to be present while you are sending. Every forum is also dedicated to some specific community or subject, such as travel, gardening, motorcycles, vintage cars, cooking, social issues, music artists, and more. Forums are very popular, and are renowned for being quite addictive because they put you in touch with many similar-minded people.

Normally, email accounts reside on a remote computer. To save online time, you need an email client program to be able to download emails from the remote server and store them on your computer. This way you can download all your emails at one go, close the Internet connection and read the mails when you want to. You may also write your email offline and later, when you next connect to the Internet you can instruct the client to send the emails you have written. An example of a client is on Windows, is Microsoft Outlook Express, very easy to use and comes free with the Internet Explorer browser from Microsoft.

Here are the basic things that a good email client has: (a) the ability to send and receive emails quickly, (b) the ability to easily attach pictures, sounds, and other non text based files using MIME; (c) and an address book in which you can store email addresses of your friends, family members and others.

Nowadays, it’s not enough for most people to keep their photos to themselves. There are many ways to store your photos and exhibit them for the whole world to see. This led to the popularity of photo sharing sites, which let you organize your photos, make them private or public, show them to groups, email them to friends and family, or allow them to come up in searches. By tagging your photos, someone looking for red boats at seas could find your shot of just that. Flickr, Photobucket, SmugMug, Shutterfly, Picasa and Webshots are only a few of these sites. Snap some images and upload them today.

Foodies unite! The web has proved a boon for gourmets (and gourmands) everywhere. With a virtually unlimited number of recipes in websites and even more on blogs, the web is a cook’s heaven. There are food sites, product manufacturers’ sites and trade association sites with searchable databases recipes. Start with the big ones such as allrecipes.com, foodnetwork.com and epicurious.com, which should be enough for most people. Occasionally, there are videos and how-tos that are much more helpful than plain text. If you still can’t get enough of chefs and test kitchens, try subscribing to video podcasts which have regular shows that show you how it’s done in 15 minutes or less. You’ll be amazed by what you can learn in under three minutes.
